Spray polyurethane foam (SPF) or spray foam is a type of insulation that is applied as a liquid and then expands and hardens to form a solid layer.

There are two main types of spray foam: Open-Cell spray foam and Closed-Cell spray foam. Overall, the choice between Open-Cell and Closed-Cell spray foam depends on the specific needs of the project such as insulation requirements, moisture control, and budget considerations.

MORE ABOUT OUR PRODUCTS

Closed-Cell Spray Foam

Closed-Cell Spray Foam: This type is denser and more rigid. The cells within the foam are fully closed which makes it more resistant to water. It has a higher R-value per inch and also acts as a vapour barrier after 2”, offering superior insulation and moisture resistance. Closed-Cell Spray Foam is suitable for both interior and exterior applications, including walls, roofs, crawlspaces and floors.

Open-Cell Spray Foam

Open-Cell Spray Foam: This type has a lower density and is less rigid. The cells within the foam are not completely closed. It is effective as an air barrier and provides good thermal insulation but has a lower R-value per inch compared to Closed-Cell spray foam. Often Open-Cell spray foam is used for interior applications like wall cavities and ceilings. It provides excellent soundproofing qualities but is less effective as a moisture barrier.

Benefits of Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation offers many benefits for improving the energy efficiency, comfort and safety of buildings making it a popular choice for both residents and commercial applications. Some of these benefits include:

temperature icon Optimal Insulation

By forming a continuous layer of insulation, spray foam minimizes thermal bridging – the transfer of heat through structural elements like studs and joists. As spray foam expands to fill all spaces, it provides a uniform level of insulation throughout the area. This consistency ensures that there are no cold spots or fluctuations in thermal performance.

puzzle icon Versatility

Spray foam expands upon application, filling gaps, cracks, and voids in walls, ceilings, and floors. Spray foam, specifically Closed-Cell, adds rigidity to structures enhancing their overall strength and stability. Spray foam is a valuable option for a wide range of applications from residential to commercial or retrofit projects.

shield and checkmark icon Uniform Coverage

Spray foam can be applied to irregular or hard to reach areas ensuring uniform coverage and eliminating gaps. This makes it effective in spaces with complex geometries or irregular surfaces. The application of spray foam ensures that there are no missed spots or air leaks creating a continuous thermal and air barrier.

mute icon Sound Dampening

Spray foam, particularly Open-Cell, is effective at reducing noise transmission between rooms. It has a soft, porous structure that helps absorb sound waves and minimizes the amount of noise that passes through walls, ceilings, and floors, leading to a quieter indoor environment. The airtight seal created by spray foam helps to block airborne sound transmission.

fire resistant icon Resist Moisture

Spray foam insulation provides excellent moisture resistance by expanding to seal gaps and cracks, preventing water infiltration. This barrier helps protect your home from mold, mildew, and structural damage caused by moisture buildup. Unlike traditional insulation, spray foam retains its effectiveness even in damp conditions, ensuring long-lasting protection and improved indoor air quality.

eco friendly icon Eco Friendly

Spray foam products incorporate recycled materials such as recycled plastic and renewable soya oil in their production. By reducing air leakage and providing high thermal resistance, spray foam helps to lower energy consumption for heating and cooling. This results in cost savings on energy bills and contributes to environmental sustainability.

For the past several years, Grand River Insulation has provided our company with quality workmanship.  Jason Plein is a very thorough, conscientious person. Above all, I respect and value his honesty.  He always makes sure that everything is done accurately, from timing to scheduling and meeting code requirements.
